Our Story

A Legacy of Cultural Stewardship

From a modest collection of 200 artifacts to one of the world's most respected cultural institutions — our journey spans over a century of discovery.

1892

Foundation

Established by philanthropist Eleanor Whitmore with a founding collection of 200 African and Asian artifacts, the museum opened its doors to the public.

1924

Grand Expansion

The iconic neoclassical wing was completed, housing the growing sculpture and painting collections. Visitor numbers surpassed 100,000 annually.

1967

Modern Wing

A bold architectural addition brought contemporary art into the museum's narrative, featuring works from emerging global artists.

2001

Digital Heritage

Launched one of the world's first comprehensive digital archives, making the entire collection accessible to researchers worldwide.

2024

Global Recognition
